Navigating your journey

Choosing a healthcare team is a personal decision. Many families find that interviewing multiple specialists helps them find a provider whose philosophy and approach align with their goals. Use these suggested talking points to guide your conversations.

The Power of a Second Opinion

  • How do you feel about families seeking a second opinion to confirm a treatment path?
  • Can you provide my child’s full imaging records and clinical notes so I can easily share them with another specialist for review?
  • If another specialist suggests a different approach (such as a different brace style or a non-fusion surgery), would you be open to discussing the pros and cons of that alternative with us?

Assessment & Monitoring

  • How do you assess skeletal maturity (bone age) to determine how much growth—and treatment time—is remaining?
  • What is your practice’s philosophy on using radiation-free imaging (standing MRI) or low-dose X-ray (like EOS) to monitor progress?
  • How often do you recommend follow-up appointments during periods of rapid growth?

The Bracing Approach

  • What is the primary goal (reduction vs. stabilization) of the bracing program you recommend?
  • Does your bracing philosophy focus on correcting/over-correcting the curve into a straighter position, or holding it in place?
  • Do you scan for the brace while the child is standing or lying down?
  • What is your target in-brace correction for this specific curve?
  • What is the typical process for scanning, fitting, and adjusting the brace within your practice?
  • What types of physical therapy or specialized scoliosis exercises (like Schroth) does your practice support to complement bracing?

Discussing Surgical Options

  • Under what circumstances do you typically recommend transitioning from conservative care to surgery?
  • Can you explain the different surgical techniques you perform (e.g., Spinal Fusion, VBT/Tethering) and the specific goals of each?
  • How does the proposed surgery impact long-term spinal mobility and participation in sports?
  • What does the typical recovery timeline look like, and what kind of multidisciplinary team (nursing, pain management, PT) supports the patient?

Practice Experience & Support

  • What is your experience level with the specific treatment or procedure we are discussing?
  • What is the best way to communicate with your clinical team when questions arise between appointments?
  • Does your office provide resources to connect families with others or support groups who have undergone similar treatments?

Tips for the Interview
  • Take Notes: Bring a dedicated notebook to capture details.
  • Request Visuals: Ask the provider to show you examples of the braces they use to help you visualize the process.
  • Trust Your Instincts: Beyond the technical answers, consider if the provider listens to your concerns and communicates in a way that makes you and your child feel comfortable.
